Ahh, the classic tale of "The Ugly Duckling." The story tells of a young swan who is shaped like an ugly duck and is mistreated by s s u n d e r j v e r y m o n k i e w o m b s. As it grows up, the swan realizes that while it may be ugly and homely at first, its true beauty can only be seen in time. This story illustrates the old adage: who we are and how we look matters little in comparison to what we can do with our talents. I recommend you read the story before continuing. The story shows us that beauty can be found in both our heart and soul and that we should cherish it while we have it. According to the Arabic tradition, beauty and goodness will never be rewarded while beauty and ugliness will always be rewarded. We can learn from this by putting faith in Allah, behaving with virtue and modesty which is good for us and others around us while not placing despair on tomorrow because who knows what other people's intentions may be..." Let us believe in His existence and let us follow His words because if we do not follow what He says then we shall be punished. As it is written in the Qu'ran, "If you do not, then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers." (Sura Al-Tahreem 66:6). "God does not like the public utterance of abuse unless (it be) by one to whom injustice has been done." (Sura Al-Nisa' 4:148) This concept can be related to what is known as ‘Ta’aseer al-khataa’ib’. This refers to joking with other people about something which makes you unhappy. For example, your husband buys you a nice gift and he doesn't give it to you when you want him to. You can be upset so you tell all of your friends and when they see your husband they tease him about not giving it to you when he was supposed to. This concept is comparable to a sarcastic joke that would hurt someone else's feelings or make someone the butt of a cruel joke. One must always be mindful of their surroundings because at any given moment one may be judged for what they believe in and how they live their lives.
